Hi -
I'm coming out of lurk-mode to ask a question or two of those who object to
using runoff from one's roof.
First, doesn't this water go out into your yard and garden anyway?
Second, is there any reason to think that a substantial amount of toxic
material is picked up from an old roof that has been "washed off" with every
passing rain, in the 5 or so seconds that the water is running down from top
to gutter? I'm not being snide, just wondering if this is the biggest worry
we have regarding our veggies.
Mind you, I water from tap-filled containers that have sat for several hours
to a day, when I can, but am not above just turning on that cold chlorinated
hose, if I haven't planned ahead enough and that's the only way my plants are
going to get their water!
I thank each of you for your wonderful contributions and thoughts on this
list....

If you were to use the runoff from your roof then you might as well
use all the crazy chemicals to grow your veggies. Besides bird
droppings <beneficial> there are many things picked up by the rain from
the roof and gutter you would not want to eat. Petroleum products from
asphalt shingles just to mention one.
