I would agree this is all probably true in most climates where there is lots
of rainfall.  But in our blazingly hot AZ desert sun, an asphalt roof will
deteriorate more rapidly, especially during the hot season when there is no
rainfall for 4 - 6 months.  Then when it does rain, the months of loosened
roof material all washes down during the first gully washer of the monsoon
season.
