Carol,
Yeah, I could filter probably - I just don't know if that is just too much at that point (I'm trying to save $ and resources, so depending on how I filter, I might just cross that line...)  In utah we don't often get enough rain to catch in a barrell directly and use, so I like the idea of extra surface area of my shed to catch it (shed is 1300 sq. feet, quite large)  Actually, I'm coming to realize that if I don't do anything with the shed, it will be less than desirable, since the water gets plopped down right into my garden as it is.  Most of what is getting extra waters will be tomatoes, so that is good.  But, I'd like a little bit more control over it.

On the subject of raised beds - I at first thought the two went hand in hand, since everybody that was trying to get me to sq. ft. was doing it with raised beds.  I definitely think there are some advantages to using them with this method - my children didn't trample my one raised bed last year, but they did trample the non-raised areas.  (I didn't sq. ft. last year, only had the raised bed - fortunately if I divide it in half it almost makes 2 4x4 beds).  I think it also allows you to build you garden up bigger, and it makes it easier to attach some sort of enclosure over the top for pest or weather control.  (Though that CAN be done without the beds also).

Hi all!
While you were discussing rain off a roof, I went out and collected rain water
directly.  I planted beets, onions, brocolli, cabbage, lettuce, spinach, and peas
while a soft rain fell.  Second hand rain is probably like second hand smoke and
I did not want any.  Have any of you considered filtering your run-off as it
enters whatever you catch in?  Just a thought.
Is anyone else out there combining sqft gardening with raised beds?
Happy squares,
Carol P.
