Jim- Tin cannot rust if I remember correctly. Regardless, rust is just iron ore in the water... seems harmless to me. You could hook up the collected water with your thingamajig, you know, the water spreader thingy. lol.

Yeah, the roof I am thinking of collecting water from doesn't have shingles, let alone asphalt ones.  Just tin.  (So, rust may be a problem, who knows.)  Like I say - I'm already getting water from there unwittingly.  If there are problems, then I'd best look into relocating my garden(or redirecting water elsewhere).  I think it would be beneficial to use the water for other purposes than a vegetable garden for sure - to decrease my overall out-of-the hose water usage.  (That may be more difficult to distribute though).

I wonder if there would be an easy/inexpensive way to filter the water...

If you were to use the runoff from your roof then you might as well
use all the crazy chemicals to grow your veggies.  Besides bird
droppings <beneficial> there are many things picked up by the rain from
the roof and gutter you would not want to eat.  Petroleum products from
asphalt shingles just to mention one.
