Last year was the first year I had a real garden , and I started most of my
own plants for under lights. I started early in the season, so I had time
to start a second batch if the first failed. I took one packet of seeds
(tomato if I remember right) and planted one seed per hole in my flat per
the sq ft method. After 2 weeks I had only one or two germinate, so I
figured that pack must have bad germination rate. I started another flat
with the same seed packet in same room with the same soil and water and
conditions, but I put 3 - 4 seeds per hole to allow for poor germination.
After ONE week,I had 100% germination. I noticed the same thing with other
seeds. I think it has something to do with having a little competition.
(The same precept behind the new red plastic mulch) I no longer put one
seed per hole--I go for two or three and then use my scissors to snip off
all but the best one per hole.
