Hello from 82 degrees hot Sacramento!NONONONONONO!!!!!! Where di my spring gooooo????????????I refuse to skip spring and I just want to go on record here as having said that. It was sunny and cool and then- BAM!!!!! we have been and will be--hot for at least another week- lows tonite in the 60's.They are ta;lking about the real possiblity of a drought. I am just not ready. We need the rain and If the ground dries up and gets hard and  I will not be able to get it all turned in time. I have to do it by hand and have just dumped a bunch of compost and topsoil(like 6 truckloads) and stuff near the new beds. The compost was practically free and the topsoil is for a drainage problem that I am working on - which is another reason why NEED more time.New beds in clay soil. They are so hard to dig when that clay hardens up. My choices have been raised beds( yep- have several )or to just dig out alot of the clay and hard pan and replace with good stuff. Have also done some lasangna beds and they work great ( turn that clay to loam in a year)but they and raised beds won't work against the sde of the house  unless I put something behind them to keep them away from the wood and then build a higher border, blah blah blah. Not what I had planned- Don't  ask me why -But I want to to these ones the old fashioned way- not exactly double digging- but nearly.ANYWAY- I just want the ground to stay  soft for a couple more weeks so I can work this stuff in and get some pereneals and my soakers in.I did the unspeakable and hit the lawn on the beds with roundup several times in the last couple of months so I don't think I am going to cut up a lot of weeds. Am planting vegies in with flowers as well as veggie beds alone this year.  I know that probably what will happen is that it will get cool again and every one that is sticking their tomatoes and cukes in now will wind up losing them-I WANT the APRIL showers darn it- I am planning on them and I deserve them. I am still planting spring bulbs and putting in those walkways I put off all last year. Got two flagstone ones in(yeah!!!!!) and a small brick one and still need some steppers around the planting beds- digging in that clay after it has dried is impossible for me.I can water- sure- but am also trying to seed a tiny patch of lawn ans have a neighbor helping me to put a drip sytem or revamp my soaker system. - A lot going on and just do want to be having to pretend it is June when it is March. By the way- for any of you weakings out there who don't have a rototiller and just need something to mix the soil and breakup up small areas- my garden claw has served me well for manyyears.- It may not be High tech- but I can make a bed in a few hours and mix in compost and amendments- and it is really scary looking to see me swinging it wildly over my head and yelling like a banchee if you are a bunch or 8 year old boys who have jumped the fence and happen to get caught stealing plums.(I made them come back and do some weeding and then sent them home with enough plums to give them the runs for weeks)Best $29 I ever spent. We are still having rolling blackouts. They say to expect it big time thu the summer. If we have a drought on top  of no swampcooler?- hmmm. I don't know guys.Last drought was pretty scary. Everything I grow would just die- that's all.I think I would just have to lie in a cool bathtub , drink scotch and read detective stories by candlelight-mourning the death of my poor ,poor plants..Somebody slap some sense into me. -Teri
