I have wooden raised beds. I nailed in galvanized roofing nails every
foot on the short sides and every other foot on the long sides. I used to
wrap some string around the nails to grid off the garden before planting.
Now I just eyeball off of the nails. If you have a raised bed or level
ground
you could just use some plastic stakes pounded close to the ground
(so they aren't a tripping hazard). I mention using plastic because I like
making improvements (garden beds, paths, bed improvements) that are
more or less permanent. Wooden skewers would work just as well
but would be gone by next year. Large wooden stakes could be used
but will decay over time.

While I liked the strings mark off my squares the first year or two,
after that I found they got in the way. Perhaps the peas had grabbed
the strings, or it was hard to move the pumpkin plants tendrils because
it had caught the strings, or in other cases I wanted to plant some herb
or something at the intersection of some squares.
