The luffa sponge is a gourd that has a very fibrous vein structure. After the flesh has been removed (by drying?) you are left with the luffa sponge that makes an excellent backscrubber. In Texas? I've got an aunt who grows them occasionally in what is probably a zone 9 climate that gets around 26" of rain. I'd guess you'd treat them a bit like rockmelon (canteloupe/muskmelon).
