Re: Intro RE: raised bed construction

Hi everyone, I am not exactly new to the list but I have been lurking.
I moved to Sacramento Ca about 6 years ago and last year I bought a house.
After apartment living, having a yard to garden in is a dream come true!

I struggled with two 4X4 foot squares last year with some success. But this
year I am raising the beds by building a frame around them and backfilling.

I am also adding an additional 4 feet by making on block 4X8 foot.

I am trying to put together the perfect soil, as per "the book" but
I don't have a ready source of wood ash. Any suggestions are welcome.

Last year I had somekind of wilt affect my cucumbers and squash plants,
though the cucumber did a lot of production prior to deleveloping the wilt.

My tomatoes weren't doing anything until I heard about the lack of bees
and started hand pollinating, even so the fruit never got bigger than a
tennis ball, however I really enjoyed the flavor, and there were plenty
on two plants. I also planted, in the squares, the indian three sisters,
corn, bean and squash. I had mixed success. The corn did not develop
heads with a full amount of kernals, the beans did fine, although the plants
were never big and healthy looking and of course the squash croaked.

I am torn as to how I am going to water the grass without the overhead
sprinklers in the area of the garden.

So you can see I have been quite busy with the vegitable patch.

I have followed the list with great interest, and even found some occasional
humor thrown in which I have enjoyed. And I have learned alot as well.

I just wanted to offically say HI to everyone and a big thank you too.
