Checking seeds?

Hello,
I've got 39 packets of tomatoe seeds, all different varieties, and
some are very old. I inherited them, so I don't know how they were stored.
Some packets had never been opened. I've made a numbered inventory of them
and I thought that I could start a few seeds from each packet by placing
them on small square numbered pieces of moistened paper towel placed on a
paper plate, just to see which ones will grow and which ones I should throw
away. Because I am new to gardening I really don't know whether or not I
should cover the seeds, I would like to be able to easily see if they will
sprout. Should they be kept in the dark or by the window light? I was
thinking I should cover them with kitchen plastic wrap (like saran or
something) to keep them moist, but I am concerned they won't get enough air
circulation? Should I have mixed them with something? I remember reading
somewhere that mixing seed with a paste mixture of cornstarch helps? Am I on
the right track with this? If anyone can offer me advice you can email
direct, if you like. Thanks, Dot
