Hi James:
The books by Ruth Stout deal with using a very deep mulch on the
surface of the soil (as I recall, she used salt-marsh hay), which was
replenished as needed and disturbed only to plant into or harvest. My
local library had both of them about ten years ago, but doesn't list
them any more -- I imagine they fell apart.
I checked the Bibliofind (used, rare & out-of-print books) site --
http://www.bibliofind.com -- and there are listed several copies of
her _No-Work Garden Book_ (Rodale Press, 1970s) and one copy of _How
to Have a Green Thumb Without an Aching Back_ (Exposition Press,
1961). They are both interesting books, and sound like what you might
