I'd give oregano 1 per 4 square feet--a 2' by 2' space. It'll take a couple
of years to fill out that space, though. You can plant a few small plants
around it until then. Problem with oregano is that it won't stop. It's not
as agressive as its cousins the mints, but it will encroach, slowly, slowly...

I eventually transplanted my oregano out of the square foot area and set it
off by itself where i wouldn't have to worry about it.
