Re: sqft: bush beans

Hi Rob:

A couple of considerations regarding 40 (adjoining) sq. ft. of bush
beans:
1. Will such a large area interfere with your crop rotation plan? (
What was planted there last year; where will you put legumes next
year?)
2. What kind of protection can you offer against pests? (This makes
a pretty big 'target', especially when planting intensively --
insects and/or disease could be a serious problem.)

My *personal* inclination would be to intersperse my 40 squares o'
beans with my other garden crops, to reduce the potential for
problems. (I'm assuming that you have other sq. ft. beds available;
if this is your ONLY veg. bed, all you can do is go for it & hope for
the best!)

Mel suggests 9 bush bean plants per square; I adjust that sometimes,
depending on this size of the bushes involved. If I've not grown a
particular variety before, I use his spacing and keep notes on the
results. Hope this helps; let us know what you wind up doing & how it
works out, OK?

Happy trails.....
