First timer

Although I've been a gardener for quite awhile I'll be trying Square foot
for the first time this year. One reason is that I'm tired of trying to
improve this pottery material called soil out here. Anyhow I was going to
use Mel's perfect soil mix. Question is; he calls for the addition of
wood ashes or charcoal. Don't have wood ashes anymore. Haven't used the
wood stove for three years now since we got gas forced air heat. Does
anyone know what kind of charcoal Mel refers to. Can you use the ash from
charcoal briquets?
