"milking" pumpkins

I am determined to grow a pumpkin this year that's bigger than a baseball. 
I asked my sister today how our wonderful grandpa grew such huge ones when
he was alive, and she said she remembered something about feeding them
milk.  She thought it was more of a process of dipping the vines not just
pouring the milk on.  Any thoughts on this one???  Laura
