I always push the calendar a bit. Being in Maine, pring either comes really
early or really late. To get a good crop of warm weather plants such as
peppers, tomatoes, or melons, I usually start about half of my seedlings for
the earliest possible transplant and then plant the usual amount for June
1st transplanting. Worst case, I throw out the early started plants because
they are too big. Usually, I sneak a few out with walls of water, and give
away any extra seedlings I have to people I work with.
By the way, I've found that with the walls of water, I need to put them out
for one or two weeks ahead of planting. This gives them a chance to create
a mini-climate within the WOW and warm up the soil a bit. It cuts down on
the transplant shock for the warm weather crops.
