Dear Ed,

I gave up on the slugs and beer, much to the chagrin of my Chinese Shar-Pei
who would drink it before the slugs could get a whiff and then she would
carry the bowl around the yard in her mouth and not let me take it from her.

I have read though, that if you want to use yeast it should be 1 Tbls. of
yeast & 1 Tbls. of sugar per 1 pint of water. You can use the yeast in
your wife's baking supplies, but it would be cheaper to go to your local
health food store and buy Brewers yeast in bulk. The out-of-date yeast
should work.

I don't know the answer for the amount of time it will keep, but any baker
will tell you sugar acts as a catalyst for yeast BUT refrigeration will
slow that down. I THINK you'd be safe to mix up a large batch and
refrigerate the unused portion.

Check out these two web pages for some alternate suggestions for dealing
with slugs, naturally:

Good luck!
