slugs and beer/yeast

It's time to start organizing my defenses against those @#$%*%%&^&
slugs!
In years past I have used beer with great success, but I
understand that it is the yeast in the beer that attracts them. Several
books have suggested using yeast but do not tell you how to go about
it. That appeals to me: beer is much too good for them!
So I have a few questions to pose and hope there are people on
the list with answers:
        1) Does yeast have to be fresh or will the out of date yeast
from my wife's baking supplies work?
        2) what mixture of yeast to water should I use. I'm assuming
that it is to be mixed with water.
        3) Once mixed, will it keep, or should I only mix what I plan to
use immediately?
        4) what else should I know that I don't even have the wit to
think of asking?
Thanks in advance for any and all help.
