Barrel potatoes

Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

When potatoes are started in the bottom of a barrel, how do they get enough
sunlight to grow?

The Central and Eastern Europeans, who have done this for many generations,
start with a short box and add to it as the plants grow, increasing the
height by one board increments.

When the plants stop growing, and die back, one disassembles the, by then,
tall box and harvests the crop.

I have read that the "boxes" can be as tall as ten feet by the end of the
season.

the point here is that the height must be increased incrementally or the
plants won't grow due to lack of sun.
