I'm quoting from Margaaret Lauterbach's posting from a few years back:

"Hey, this is a job for Captain Ammonia.  Spray your slugs with a 50-50
mixture of ammonia and water.  Ammonia on slug=dead slug.  Ammonia on
plant=fertilizer.  Margaret"

I tried it and it is great! A belated thanks to Margaaret for the tip!
