Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

Hey folks,

After listening to these conversations for awhile, I have to chip (HAHA) in, for what it is worth. Don't forget why we garden! It meets a deep seated human need, and there is no right way, except the way that works the best for you. Have fun, get your hands, elbows, knees, in the good spring earth and grow that garden.

Gardening is the technology of Botany, and I wonder if you realize you are an inventor every time you start a new garden?

You create a garden the way you want it within the confines of your environment. Make your environment work for you by using the square techniques and other tricks that you can pick up from your extension office and neighbors...and your own experiences.

In relationship to all plants, the only reason any of them need dirt is to support their root system and their leaf structure, hold water, and circulate nutrients.

Most times the leaf structure is a mirror of the root structure, and that relates specifically to potatoes. They are relatively bushy (some might refer to them as creeping vine structures), so they really don't need to be deep in the dirt. That is why it is so easy to grow them, unless you drown them in water or dirt!!!!

You can easily plant them on the bare ground, but it is nice to dig up the soil a bit...the new potato roots like that. Lay the potatoes (whole potatoes, cut (dried) potato sections, whatever) on top of the ground.

Cover the potatoes with something that puts the roots in the dark, but allows the leaves to grow...keep adding a layer of whatever ...straw ...shredded paper...etc until you have a sizable hill...let the leaves grow and bloom...then you have your own new potatoes...

On the subject of the hill site for vegetables...just try it...plant everything you want to plant and see what happens!!!!! ONE IMPORTANT THING TO REMEMBER ABOUT HILLS: THEY DRAIN faster than valleys.

;-)Have fun...enjoy good food and flowers from your own square garden!
