Easy to grow summer veggies, plastic snakes, and pinwheels

I already have planted or sown seeds for several melons, beans, cukes,
tomatoes, summer squashes and zucchini, corn, onions, peppers, chard,
lakota winter squash, and some small winter gourds (delicata and sweet
dumpling). What are some other favorite summer veggies to give a try at?

My "Spring" veggies, are mesclun, spinach, peas, mustard (actually a
mild mustard-spinach cross) radishes and beets. They'll all be done in
about a month to six weeks and I'd like to get some other things in the
ground when they come out.

I have some ornamental gourds that I'll be sowing at the end of this
month in a large half moon shaped bed that's about 20' across and ten
feet deep. This won't be a square foot bed, it's a big area I made for
the gourds and I am just going to let them do there thing in it.

Yesterday one of my Festival squashes (a multicolored sweet dumpling
from a Gurney's trial pack) germinated, it was so nice. I went out there
this morning and it was GONE! All that was left was a little hole where
it's little stem had come up through the ground. I think some bird had a
nice snack! 

I went and got the ten dollar box assortment of plastic snakes and two
more pinwheels at ToysRus. I laid all the snakes down throughout the
beds, I already had a couple but it just isn't enough. I set the
pinwheels to catch the breeze and I hope it will be enough to keep the
birdies out of the beds.
