Re: ((In)) Determinate Tomato Spacing

Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

My tomatoes, both determinate and indeterminate, are planted in 2 square foot spaces each and within a large round tomato cage.  I planted onions all around the outside of the cages.  The tomato plants are already so big that I cannot even imagine planting mine in 1 foot squares.  I guess it makes a lot of difference how fertile the soil is and how the plants are planted and fed.  When I plant, I put a little sugar, a little blood meal, a little calcium, and lots of composted horse manure.   I plant them deeply up to their little top few leaves.  Their stems are very strong (really don't need the tomato cage -- that is for me) are about 4 foot tall and more, and have lotsa blooms.  Anyway, that is why I have to have at least 2 square feet for each plant.  Good luck with yours.   ... I had excellent luck with indeterminate tomatoes in the 1-per-foot spacing...I trained them up trellises and removed all the suckers so that each plant was a single stem.  I was very sceptical at first but the result was a gorgeous living hedge, very easy to tend, with lotsa tomatoes.  Wouldn't do it any other way now!

Does anyone here find any advantage to changing the spacing on indeterminate tomatoes? Is the one square foot enough for larger tomato plants? What do you think?Have a great day, bill missen
