Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html
My tomatoes, both determinate and indeterminate, are planted
in 2 square foot spaces each and within a large round tomato cage. I
planted onions all around the outside of the cages. The tomato plants are
already so big that I cannot even imagine planting mine in 1 foot squares.
I guess it makes a lot of difference how fertile the soil is and how the plants
are planted and fed. When I plant, I put a little sugar, a
little blood meal, a little calcium, and lots of composted horse
manure. I plant them deeply up to their little top few leaves.
Their stems are very strong (really don't need the tomato cage -- that is for
me) are about 4 foot tall and more, and have lotsa blooms. Anyway, that is
why I have to have at least 2 square feet for each plant. Good luck with
yours. ... Nickie
