I don't know if it has ever been explained satisfactorily but I know others
have observed the same thing.
There is an old saying that if you plant one seed per hole it may not
sprout. But if you plant more than one, all will sprout. My wife who has
a profound empathy for all living things, including plants, says seeds and
plants like people get lonely and will be happier with company from other
seeds/plants. I also once read a biodynamic article (Rudolph Steiner, et.
al.) which claimed germination is enhanced by magnetic forces between
adjacent seeds.
