Juliana-  I had thought DE worked against slugs primarily. This is
interesting as I will be setting out my tomatoes around June 01. Thanks for
the tip.

| Wanted to pass along something that has worked well for me this spring.
Soon
| after I set out tomato and eggplant transplants they were attacked by flea
| beetles.  I dusted the affected plants with DE (diatomaceous earth) and
| covered them with "hot hats" (green light weight plastic "top hat" looking
| covers) that are used to protect seedlings from cold. The hot hat has a
round
| hole in the top so that water and air can get in.  I kept a close check on
| them and redusted with DE as needed.  This did the trick and I have now
been
| able to remove the hot hats as the transplants have grown sufficiently so
as
| not to be so devastated by flea beetle attack.  (Be sure to wear gloves
when
| applying DE as I have found it is very hard on the skin!)  DE is also very
| effective at fighting ants in the garden.
