Lumber and hardware are expensive, but there are other ways. For instance,
you could use a plastic kiddie pool (the type they sell for $5.00-$10.00 at
KidsRUs), you could even find some old ones at the dump. If you live near
ranches, horse tracks, fairgrounds or such things, they may have free manure
for you.

Not really, but I've found that raised beds get less weeds, so they are less
work and more production. Raised beds are also an opportunity to control
your dirt. If you can find really good garden dirt mixed for vegetable
gardens, it's well worth the money.

That all depends on what your dirt is like.

If you can't buy the book, borrow it (from the library?) My first year I
made all kinds of dumb mistakes because I didn't buy the book. It would have
been worth the expense or the trouble to borrow it.
