This is my third year for my strawberry bed, and I'm having a bumper crop.
Imagine, I almost dug up this bed and tossed the strawberries becasue they
did so poorly before! I didn't do anything to them except give them a little
cotton seed meal and fish emulsion every once in a while--I didn't even keep
it weeded very well.

My only question is, should I cut back on watering them? I know for melons,
once the fruit starts to ripen, if you water too much it washes out the
taste. These strawberries aren't the sweetest I've ever had, and they do
taste a little watered down. Any suggestions?

Virginia

I've planted my strawberries in between my squares. Originally I bought them
to go in the squares, but ran out of room. So since I was thinking I'd plant
moss or creeping thyme in the 2' gaps between the squares, I tried the
strawberry plants. It stays pretty wet and shaded but for some reason they
love it there. I don't know the "official" spacing, but each plant has
gotten big enough to take up a square and crowd its neighbor, so I doubt you
could do more than one a square. Also, someone told me once that
strawberries produce fruit only on the shoots they send out (is that right?)
so they need somewhere to send shoots off to I guess. This is only my second
growing season, so I haven't had any fruit yet. Also, do they need to be cut
back at the end of the growing season or should I leave them alone like I
did last year?

Annie Sargent who's got more planting and learning to do!
