I grow Strawberries as an edible ground cover.  That leaves more 
space in my garden for other stuff.  I have found that the way to get 
sweet berries is to wait until they are DARK red.  The redder the 
fruit, the sweeter the berry.  I know this sounds kind of obvious but 
it took me a while to figure out.  Also I wouldn't cut back on the 
water as you could stress the plant.  Which, for hot peppers actually 
makes the peppers hotter...but I ramble.

For the other person about where they fruit.  No the fruit is NOT on 
the runners, they come from the crown just like the leaves.  The 
runner is a whole other plant that uses the runner until it roots and 
then you can cut the runner (I do it in the spring).
