Isn't that the same as POT ASH.  Which I believe is very high in 
Potassium so it is used sparingly.  I think that Potassium is good for 
root development, so onions, garlic, carrots, beets, etc. like it.  
Basically the ashes are the salts left over from the wood and so, like 
if you add too much salt to your food it tastes bad, too much POT 
ASH in one place in the garden is bad.
