Kitty:
What I have experienced with this menace over the past several years is that the underground root is like a rope.  Any part of this will regenerate a vine.  I think that your idea for limiting Roundup by shielding the other plants is a great one and one I'll use in the fall.  Meanwhile, I'll pull and pull and the bindweed gets smaller and smaller as their food source is disturbed.  Just make sure that you don't try to compost any part of this plant, because you'll just introduce it to a nice, fresh growing area!

I was looking in my plant encyclopedia and I think the folks are right- this must be bindweed- because my morning glories can be pulled right out -They die back at frost and   reseed  on the top off the soil and start a new cycle in May-where ever the seeds landed- I just pulled them out  easily so this isn't  morning glory- I don't think. The bindweed sticks around-tho- is courser and  won't go away-It is more like a ground cover -right?-Kitty
