They are the sprouts that emerge from the "V" between the main vine and a
leaf stem. If allowed to grow a sucker will become a new vine, with its own
leaves, flowers, and yes, suckers. Many gardening books, including _Square
Foot Gardening_, have excellent illustrations.
On a determinate plant, you usually want these suckers to grow, because they
increase the number of fruits. On indeterminates, you may want to prune them
to control the growth of the vine or channel energy into developing fruit.
