I think the situation with peppers is a little more complicated, because
it's the SEEDS that make the pepper hot, so cross-polination, which is
affecting the seeds (like in corn) is actually a big part of the product
that you're eating. I've heard the experts go to both ends of the spectrum
on the hot pepper issue.
