I've found wire mesh cages almost essential. In a crowded place like the
square foot garden, beans tend to lean all over their neighbors. The
resulting shading of neighboring plants can be catastrophic. I've found 14"
wide rolls in green or white at places such as Home Depot. The green ones
camouflage nicely with the garden; the white ones will probably lower your
property value. :-P

The Book (pp. 130, 134f) illustrates cages in use with the sides open, like
this:
  _________
 /_/_/_/_/|
/_/_/_/_/||
|||     |||
|||     |||
||/     ||/
|/      |/

I prefer them with the top open, as it is easier (to me) to reach in to weed
and harvest:
  ________
 /       /|
/_______/||
|_|_|_|_|||
|_|_|_|_|||
|_|_|_|_||/
|_|_|_|_|/

If you're doing a simultaneous (non-staggered) planting of an entire bed,
support will not be necessary.
