Ron, Do it by Volume. Take a large coffee can, and find out haw many cans the 40 pounds of fertilizer will fill. Then use 1/6 of that amount. (16 sq ft = about 1/6 of 100 sq ft). For example: If the bag fills six cans, use one full can on the 4 x 4 square.
