I'd just like to weigh in and say that Janet's method is safer than using
1/4 lb per block. Because of the dangers of overfertilization, it's best to
stick to the recommended amount. (Think of what happens to people when *we*
overeat! :-) "A little less than 1/4 pound" would mean taking more than a
third off the top.
I've tried estimating by volume, and i'd much rather use a kitchen scale. Of
course, once you've used that scale and recorded the level in a measuring
cup, you'll never need the scale again.
