You can keep the beds as close or as far apart as you like. The reason for
having space between the beds in the first place is for our convenience: we
need to be able to reach into the bed from the outside. The illustrations in
the book have the beds 1' apart. (They are not raised, but then, Mel didn't
have to deal with "Texas gumbo.") I don't feel comfortable with them less
than 2' apart. It all depends upon what's most comfortable for you.

It's possible, but may not be necessary if you're raising only vegetables.
Most vegetables do fine between 6.0 and 7.0. For the sake of the tomatoes
and cabbages, it's best to have it closer to 7.0. However, flowers have
wildly differing pH requirements. If you do try to engineer the pH levels,
keep in mind that it takes several months for the lime, sulfur, or gypsum to
have an effect.
