According to my huge Rodale's Encyclopedia, _Oreganum vulgare_ has little
flavor, and _O. heracleoticum_ is the variety you should be looking for. It
gives _O. hirtum_ and _O. vulgare hirtum_ as synonyms for _O.
heracleoticum_. I guess whatever you get, it should have an "h" as one of
its initials.
I had some oregano once, but was never sure which variety i had. Its flavor
was milder than store-bought oregano, but was quite sufficient for my
culinary purposes. In fact, its mildness increased the margin for error in
recipes. (Ever used too much dry oregano? :-P)
