Plants around raised beds?

I have one 4x12' raised bed.  Right now, I have mud/soil surrounding
the bed, but this clearly needs fixing!  Some time ago there was
discussion on the list about putting chives or thyme around the bed.
But, can you really walk on this?  Any other suggestions, please.  I'm
talking about on the ground, not in the bed itself.  Thanks, Judy
