In my old Time-Life book on vegetables, it says asparagus can be planted as
closely as 12 inches apart (I did that and the asparagus are doing OK) but if
the plants are planted that close together then the rows must be at least 2
feet apart.
However, if planting in raised beds, the asparagus don't like being planted
right next to the edge. Their roots just pop out and wither. But I did it
anyway and I get enough asparagus to feed 4 people while they are producing.
Many meals of asparagus. Yum.
This bed is about 4 feet x 8 feet.
I can also tell you that I planted asparagus where I later decided I didn't
want it. It keeps coming back even though I make a determined effort to kill
it. Asparagus seems to like having other plants around it. But it doesn't
like weeds. Strawberries around the edges of your bed will do fine. I've
been fighting asparagus in my strawberry beds for years. I also have one
venerable clump (10 years old) in another bed that is tilled regularly and
used for planting a succession of different vegetables every year. This
clump produces huge asparagus and will not go away.
So while I wouldn't dig in the asparagus bed each year to plant transplants,
I wouldn't hesitate to plant seeds or plant strawberries right away around
the edges.
