Re: Questions on Some Spacings

> What spacing do you use for basil plants?

Depends. What kind of basil is it?

>For "elephant garlic"?

I plant my elephant garlic in the fall here in Texas, and I plant my
cloves approximately 6-8" apart, sometimes a bit farther if I am
interplanting with something else (like Swiss chard) or planting it
among my tomatoes and onions, etc. If it's just going to be the
garlic, I suggest trying about 8" at first to see if that will work
out for you. It was fine in my garden this way.

><snip> jerusuleum (sp?) artichokes?

Aggh! Stand back! These things should be planted at least 16" apart
in my opinion. They are relatives of sunflower, and they resemble
sunflowers a great deal once they've zoomed up to about 7-8 feet
tall! The major difference is that their flowers are rather small --
about 2-3" in diameter -- and yellow rather than the huge flowers one
usually associates with standard sunflowers.

Jerusalem artichokes will multiply, and just a few will give you so
many you won't know what to do with them! They will keep coming
back...again and again and again...when you harvest you will never
find all those little tubers lurking down there, and you will have
them *forever*! This could be good or bad, depending upon where you
plant them.... :/ Make sure that you plant them in a location where
they are going to be relatively permanent for awhile.
