Sorry to smother everyone with questions all at once but I'm a newbie at any kind of gardening and living in West Texas we've been able to plant for a couple of months now (we have a looonnng growing season). First, we planted 3 squares of onion sets (1 of red onion, 2 of 10-15's) on March 11th. About a week ago, 2 of the squares of sets had the green tops just lay down on the ground like someone walked on them. They are still green so I don't know what the deal is. Mel says to harvest when the tops turn brown and fall over. Does this mean something is wrong with our onions or that they are just getting close to harvest time? Has anyone else had this happen? Please advise! Second, we also planted two big planters of potatoes on March 11th. They are gorgeous plants and have had unopened blooms for a couple of weeks now. We can't find anything about when the potatoes are ready to harvest. Does anyone know how to tell either by looking at the plant or by length of time since planting? I'm just dying to see how they turn out but don't want to harvest them too early. Suggestions? Thanks in advance for the helpful advice. Once again, sorry to bombard everyone all at once with all of the questions!
