Beet leaves dead

I looked this morning & a whole lot of beet leaves are dead.  I also
don't think the transplants have grown any or much since I put them in
over1 month ago.  It is *unseasonably* cold here.   New to beets.  Do
they require hot, hot?  Thanks, Judy (zone 7, Maryland near DC)
