Hi Stephanie, > We bought a six pack of eggplants at Lowe's and they were a little yellow > when we bought them. We put them in the garden, fed them, watered them > and they are still a yellowish green. Having never done eggplant before, > is this their natural color? I'm used to the green of squash and > tomatos, but these are a little more limey yellow green than the sugar > snap peas (boy are those growing!). Should we worry or do something to > help them and if so, what? As is common with store bought plants these were beginning to show the signs of nutritional stress. Little containers with big plants dry out quickly, requiring frequent watering and subsequently their nutrients get leached out of their soil. Putting them in the garden is the best thing for them. Keep them warm and fed regularly, eggplant is fussier about night & daytime temperatures than tomatoes and peppers even. When they get what they want they respond well, growing into big lush and very green plants. ;-) I can't recommend a combination of fish emulsion and seaweed fertilizer enough, this is a great plant tonic. Fish emulsion is a suspension providing the major nutrients and persists in the soil for a couple of weeks. Seaweed contains many trace minerals and plant growth hormones. It is an effective stimulant to root growth and has very positive effects on general vigour. Just give them a little time, they'll turn around for you.
