Jennifer, Onions, herbs (most of them), and carrots don't take up much space and are pretty easy to grow in my experience this first year of gardening. We planted onion sets and thumbelina carrots as fillers and they don't overtake the squares like some of the bushier crops. As far as a gardening apron, I saw some nice ones at Target the other day for a decent price. They have pockets for seeds, etc. and loops for tools. Don't know if that's what you are looking for or if you have Target around your area, but if so you might go look in their garden section. Walmart and kmart also had some but I didn't really look at them much--seems like Target's made a better impression on me...
