Doug, In the square foot method, tomatoes and other vineing crops are grown vertically (Exceptions like pumpkins and watermelons noted). I grow cherry tomatoes in cages. I think they need the support. I grow tomatoes on vertical frames made out of 1/2 water pipe, 8 feet high. Stock at most plumming centers. I use the elbows and had a piece of pipe cut at 4 feet for the top. I push the pipe one foot in the ground and attach it to the block using the omega shaped clamp designed for the pipe. I've attached a nylon growing trellis, looks like nylon string made into 4 inch by 4 inch squares, and attached it to the pipe using nylon cable tie wraps. I pinch the suckers, the stems growing out at a 45 degree angle to the main stem and let the plant grow right up the trellis, weaving it in and out as it grows. Hope this helps.
