Back in the dark ages I mulched my LARGE row garden w/ 1-2 inches of fresh
grass clippings between the rows, over 2-3 layers of newspaper. I had row
length "drip irrigation" pipes (before so-named drip irrigation) under the
mulch. Excellent results!!!!
I left the mulch in place over our terribly wet winters (east of North
Bend, WA) and in the spring it was virtually part of the soil and I simply
ran my Troy built "once over lightly" and started all over again.
This was, at that time- mid '70s- what I considered state of the art
methodology for my 36' X 110' row garden. It "worked for me."
This year is my first serious return to gardening, having been a
live-aboard, certified, boat bum for most of the intervening years. I
watched MEL on PBS for many years in the early 80s , and more recently on
cable, and have decided that sq-ft is the only thing that makes sense.
My intent is to implement the contemporary form of drip irrigation ( T TAPE
et al) with a dried grass clipping mulch (in an experimental portion) over
the T TAPE, where appropriate.
Please be assured that I will share my findings!!!!!!

Dore Tyler, soon in Tacoma, WA
