Potatoes can be grown in square foot beds if you use a row system. Last
fall (I'm in hot zone 9 and we plant spuds in fall), I planted 3 lbs. of
seed potatoes in a 4 X 18-ft. space of a longer 4 X 28-ft bed. I spaced the
seed potatoes 12 inches apart and did two rows, one on each side of the bed.
I planted them in a trench 6 inches deep and filled in about 3 inches of
soil over the seed spuds the day I planted. When they sprouted, I started
pushing the remaining soil over the tops. When the growth pushed about six
inches above the soil, I topped the bed with about 12 inches of pine straw.
I let the foliage come up through that. Last month, I harvested when foliage
started to yellow. Plants never bloomed, but I hardly ever see potato blooms
in my southern latitude. Short story is that I harvested 32 lbs., which is
about what all the books say you should get with any method--1 pound of
potatoes for each seed potato planted, and I set in 30 seed spuds. I was
very pleased with this method, because other growing techniques, including
the potato barrel system, have not worked for me.
