Such was the case with my lot. NO topsoil anywhere, only hardpan clay.
It's tough to get even grass to grow. Try raised beds. I built three 4x4
beds out of 2x12's (you can use 2x6's or 2x8's depending on the crops you
want to grow) and stapled weed block on the bottom, then filled with Mel's
perfect soil mix (1/3 peat moss, 1/3 compost, and 1/3 vermiculite). My
garden seems to be doing pretty well since this is my first year to try
SQFT gardening. The only drawback is you may have to water a little more
often than usual.
