Well, this being my first year of really having a decent sized veggie
garden (we just put in a 3 x 11 ft bed which brings the square footage
of beds up to about 140 sq ft, I think), I am using a variety of
methods. I read several books last year, including Ruth Stout's year
round mulch book. And I have been reading more this year.
Since my garden is on a slope, we've had to partially raise the beds -
the back is level with the ground, the front it raised 12 - 14". Some
of the beds are raised both at the back and front (8-12" at the back,
around 2' at the front).
We haven't followed any particular techniques for digging the beds.
We've just gone at it with the mattock, spade, axe (for those stubborn
roots) short saw (for those roots again), clippers (for the smaller
roots), fork, and our 1/4" mesh hardware cloth screen through which we
have screened all the earth. Did I mention that we have lots of roots?
The beds are all dug at least 12", some up to 24". The last bed we
put in today for my potatoes is just raised so we didn't have to dig
the ground much at all. It will be 12" in the back, 24" or so in the
front. The beds are being filled with earth which we are excavating
for the cold cellar we're building, and from some piles of old compost
I have found from when the power company cleared a road about 10 years
ago, and just pushed all the trees and graded soil to one side. Nice
stuff.
Hopefully I'll be able to work on my web site where I want to post my
gardening experience along with pictures of our progress.
