The squash/zucchini/melon group are obvious candidates, with big, textured
leaves and prominent blossoms. Okra has a nice structural look and pretty
blossoms. Onion, leek and chive make a nice contrast with leafy vegetation.
Carrots and parsley/parsnip grown in blocks have airy, ferny foliage. Rhubarb
and chard have some colorful stalks. Artichoke plants are very impressive,
with big craggy leaves and the artichoke buds. Corn grown in tight blocks as in
Sqft suggests a lush clump of bamboo. The veggie patch has few showy flowers,
but some nice textures. Here in Israel we grow a lot of sunflowers - about the
showiest edible I can think of!

The Square foot method of growing stuff vertically on mesh fencing means that a
lot of veggies can be used to give the effect of a formal hedge. This kind of
growing is an obvious stylistic match for any arbors, espaliers, or trelliswork
in the rest of the garden plan. For those who are using Sqft to shoehorn a
garden into a small, urban space, this is good, because a more formal approach
will suit a garden in a built-up area. However, it must be kept up - in a
formal garden layout, you will see EVERY piece of trash that much more clearly.
